Earl Powell

Earl N. Powell has been president of the Design Management Institute since 1985. During his tenure, many innovative programs have been initiated, and the Institute has developed an international reputation for excellence in design management research, scholarship, and world-class educational programs.

Powell founded the Design Management Journal and established the Institute's Case Study Program, which produces teaching cases distributed worldwide by Harvard Business School Publishing. He initiated the TRIAD Design Project in collaboration with the Harvard Business School; founded the International Forum on Design Management Research & Education; and serves on numerous boards, including the European Academy of Design, the Japan Institute of Design, and the German Design Council. He has worked to ensure that the Institute's Web site serves the worldwide design and design management communities.

He holds an undergraduate degree in industrial design, an MA and MFA in painting, and has worked as an industrial designer, design manager, artist, college instructor, and academic dean. In the fall of 2002 Powell received an honorary doctor of letters from the University of Westminster for his numerous contributions to design management. He is also a frequent lecturer and design management consultant.

David Norton

Dave Norton is a leading-edge thinker, strategist, and educator in experiential marketing and design processes. His most recent speaking engagement is with Harvard Business School, on Experience Architecture. His workshops have been attended by management teams from Microsoft, Adidas, Deloitte & Touche, Procter & Gamble, Holland America, Ernst & Young, Intuit, and Thomson Publishing. An ethnographer, Dave has led diverse teams of marketers, brand strategists, product developers, Web strategists, and designers in field studies where they learned first-hand what their customers need. As Vice President of Experience Strategy and Research for Yamamoto Moss, a premier design firm based in Minneapolis, MN, Dave has developed and guided fields studies, developed marketing strategies, and produced actionable outcomes for companies like Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Intrawest Resorts, Novartis, Procter and Gamble, Wells Fargo, Intel, Wilsons Leather, and many other nationally known businesses. Dave has written and spoken extensively on understanding consumers, the experiences they want, and trends in consumer behavior.

Gregory Beck

Gregory Beck is a New York-based architect specializing in environments that combine media technology and narrative content. He designed the simulation theater attractions at Luxor Las Vegas, corporate museums for the People Magazine Group and Lockheed Martin, and retail projects for Swatch and CNN. He is the former director of architecture for Sony New Technologies. Mr. Beck is co-director of URBAN NARRATIVES, an environment and media research group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
